What We Do in the Shadows

Hey there, stranger.

Since this week was released one of my favourite tv shows, What we do in the Shadows (base on the mockumentary by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement) I thought it would bee fun to show you a couple of outfits I did during this quarantine revisiting my darker side (you know, once you go black you never go back; it doesn't matter how many Emily Temple Cute dresses I have, I'm a goth at heart always).

Visiting the Schuttersgalerij at Kalverstraat

Hey there, stranger;

How are you doing? I hope you're safe at home, taking care of yourself and the ones you love. Seems that we are gonna be stuck together for a while, and although I don't wanna spend my days in front of the laptop, I'm gonna try to update this a little bit more frequently with nice places I've been discovering around The Netherlands, so you have something to read and look forward when all the quarantines end.

A couple of weeks ago, before all the madness started in Europe, I met my beloved Cassie for a treat to ourselves having some delicious brunch and a nice walk around Amsterdam.

90s nostalgia

One of the most powerful methods nowadays in marketing is the use of nostalgia as a way to engaged with people. You can see it not only on cinema or tv shows like Stranger Things or The Get Down, but also in fashion shops, toys or music.

The use of nostalgia is really affecting people of my generation and before, and early 90s kids. But, in a different way, is also affecting the Millennial generation. The so-called "Nostalgia Marketing"(tapping into positive cultural memories from previous decades, designed to drive energy to modern campaigns) is working so well because reliving positive memories and beloved icons from the past feel good. Fond memories make us smile, and that leaves us open to brand messaging, reaching us to an emotional level (the holy grail of brand marketing). Even for people who didn't live that era, like de Millennials, it moves something inside them.

For me, the problem of Nostalgia Marketing is that you sell an idea from the past that takes you back to your childhood... But what's left for the present? We can't live in the past forever, we must learn from it and not only take the good or bad, but reinvent it for the next generations. We're not old ladies talking about how good was living during the 80s or 90s (yet). And if we're doing that, we should stop it. The reason? You can't fight for your future is you only look to the past. Nostalgia is good and nice for a while, but we must remember that it comes from the past, and we must keep walking forward, without getting stuck in a time that seems better but is not our actual time.

I know I'm totally a 90s nostalgic person. When I look at it, I smile with the fashion, with the music, with the cinema or comic books. But the truth is that I would never go back there. I lived, I learned, and now, despite the fashion that I normally wear... I wanna keep running towards the future.

Friday night at Tarifa

Last weekend I spent with my family a few days in Tarifa. It's been a long time since I visited this small town, and we took the opportunity to discover a couple of very interesting places.

That's Africa's coast. Just 14km separates Spain from Morocco at this point.

We ate at a wonderful restaurant called "El Caserón", which tasted a delicious grilled octopus (And I do not consider myself a big fan of octopus!).

We also discovered that the Fishmarket of Tarifa is open during summer at night in order to provide fresh fish to those who wish to eat there. It's a proposal with lots of charm, and we'll definitely return to try it.

Back to Warsaw: You normally don't see me this way...

And I must say it's true! You normally don't see me in pants, and that's because I normally don't wear them! But when I saw a couple of months ago this gorgeous jean salopettes, I totally fell in love. I used it when I was back in Warsaw, and it was really cosy and great.

Back to Warsaw: Forest ghosts around Mokotów district

I must say that I almost just arrived from Warsaw and I'm already planning my return to this city that has me totally captivated, not only for its beauty, but also 'cause it's where is one of my favorite persons in the world, my friend Jairo.

For five days I've been enjoying his beloved company through the streets of Warsaw, a city that never ceases to amaze us when we walk together.

Over and over many setting suns I have run, I have waited for the rain to come. When through that mist I see the shape of you and I know, and I know that I'm in love with you...

Last weekend I went with Vane and Aimi to Sant Antoni Market, full of old books and comics.

Rebel Grrrl

Yet the revival of the 90s can be seen today in shop windows and fashion blogs, there is a spirit that I quite miss today: the spirit of the Riot Grrrls.

Hey, wait; I'm not saying that there isn't that spirit today, but I've noticed some manipulation on it, and, and how some people try to divert attention from important issues such as rape or harassment to trivial things like if we (girls) shaved or the way we dress.

In the 90s, access to information wasn't as fast or as effective as it is today. Nowadays, within a few clicks, you can access an ocean of ideas and opinions, among which is easy to lose yourself. Maybe because I did live my teens in the 90s, at a little town in southern Spain and with a look that was not "normal" for this site (although what is "normal"?, I wondered to myself constantly) I learned to pay attention to the really important things.

The point of this whole issue is not whether I shave or do not, if I dress in a certain way or another, whether if  I like boys, girls or both, if I use only the female gender to speak or if I like a particular brand of clothing or lingerie; NO, the importance of this matter is that we, women, have the same rights as men and that the above-named features are not entitled to ANYONE, whether male or female, to insult, harass, mistreat or rape us.

And if I express this today from this humble corner of the Internet, is because I believe that, despite the steps forward that we're giving each and all together, we still have far to walk, and we lose ourselves between banal little things.

Remember: the ultimate goal of any riot grrrl and any woman and men who are with our cause should be only one: EQUALITY and RESPECT.

I'm gonna push you further into my dream, the back of every head hold something obscene.

Finally, I'm back in Barcelona! I arrived last Wednesday night and, as Andrés was here until Sunday, we spent most of the time hanging around together.

I'll show you in another post what we did, as today just wanna show you a couple of photos from yesterday when I visited my beloved friend Vanessa at Santa Casilda. It was almost closing time and I thought it would be nice to pick her up and walk home together.

I must say I notice much difference wearing some of my clothes now; can you notice the difference? :D!!
